Foals suckle from their mothers for the first few months of life, typically nursing every few hours. As they grow, they gradually begin to eat solid food and can start to feed independently by around 3-4 months old. By the time they are weaned at around 6 months, they rely entirely on grazing and solid food for their nutrition. Adult horses, of course, feed independently and graze on grass or hay.
