Baron Karl von Drais invented the first two-wheeled, steerable, human-powered device known as the "laufmaschine" or "running machine" in 1817. This invention is considered a precursor to the modern bicycle. Drais demonstrated his invention on June 12, 1817, in Mannheim, Germany. The device did not have pedals; instead, riders pushed off the ground with their feet.
