How can you compare the two wives of the story A horse and two goats?

the two wives are vaguely different. Muni's wife has much more control over him as she has the "upper hand", and feels more sympathetic for him rather love. In this family Muni's wife is the provider as he leaves her alone so she can "conjure up some food for him in the evening". There also most likely not to be in love, as they were married when she was 8 and he was 10. The ages which they were married at point to more of an arranged marriage. This more common in Indian culture than it would be in American culture. Also there is a lack of trust in their relationship, after Muni brings the hundred rupees she accuses him of stealing. With this she threatens him, saying that she "will go away to her parents". This is showing that she will not share his shame,

The American's wife and him probably married more by choice, having a more mutual understanding. The man seems to have a fairly good relationship with her. When talking about the horse statue and placing it in the living room, he doesn't worry to much about her reaction."Ruth might disapprove, but I will convince her". This is showing that his wife would be willing to listen and be understanding and that the American counts on that. This further supported by the fact that when the American man wanted to visit other civilizations his wife "called the travel agent the next day". He also does not seem to be too controlling towards his wife saying " Ruth can go back by air if she likes".He gives her choices. The American man and his wife relationship seems to be built on more respect and understanding than the Indian couple.

One thing I noticed about the wives, was that in our general mindset we would expect the woman in America to be in control and liberal, and provide for her family in a way. though the tables are reversed in this story. Muni's wife is definitely has more power over Muni than Muni does over her, and she provides for him. In a place like India you would expect women to be a bit more submissive and conservative than she is.
