German Shepherds were developed from working sheep herding dogs who happened to have some wolf blood in them. Wolves themselves were not used in development of the breed.

Yes. It is believed that all dogs originated from wolves and were developed by selected breeding by humans. Early dogs used in the German Shepherd breeding program are known to have some wolf blood in them, but over a hundred years of selective breeding they are now a fully domesticated breed.


Yes, they are both part of the Canine family; however, they are separate species, where as all breeds of domesticated dogs are the same species. Meaning, a German Shepard is more closely related to a Chihuahua than a Wolf.
