The retail price of a loaf of bread in the United States took a dramatic jump just prior to the start of the year in 1916. The average price of bread was 5 cents per loaf based on a survey of 210 brands. By May of 1916 the price per loaf of all but 14 of those brands had jumped to an outrageous 6 cents per loaf and by September of that year was selling for 7 cents per loaf. The wheat embargo on the U.S. and the war in Europe was beginning to have a cost to the American consumer.
