The first friction match was invented in 1827 by English chemist John Walker. He created a match by coating a wooden stick with a mixture of chemicals, which ignited when struck against a rough surface. However, the first safety match, which could only ignite on a specially prepared surface, was developed in the 1850s by Swedish chemist Gustaf Erik Pasch.
