What is an important piece of environmental legislation passed in the 20th century?

One I can think of from my childhood in Liverpool, England, was the passing of the clean air act - creating smokeless zones. This act helped to eliminate the dense (yellow) smog that inflicted cities due to smoke from industry and homes burning coal being mixed with low lying clouds.
