Thomas Hooker and his followers left the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636 and traveled to the Connecticut River Valley, where they established the settlement of Hartford. This migration was driven by Hooker's desire for greater religious and political freedom. The Fundamental Orders of 1638-1639, which he helped draft, served as one of the first written constitutions that created a government in the western world.
