How many miles ca a vw jetta take if normally maintained?

I have a friend (who is a VW mechanic) who has a 1996 Jetta GLS with a 2.0L engine. It has nearly 300k miles on it and it still has lots of power (relatively speaking of course) and runs smooth. The engines are great. Of course, you will have to replace/repair other stuff over time.
