The end of a food chain is known as the apex predator. It eats something lower on the chain, but there is nothing that preys upon it. Polar bears, for example, are apex predators. The human race is a special case; we are effectively above all food chains, by reason of our technological advantage. There is no species on Earth that we cannot kill.
