When oxygen is not in a compound with some other elements, we don't see it becasue it is a colorless gas at the temperatures and pressures we normally encounter.

You would probably be able to see oxygen in solid or even liquid form, but the environment would be so cold there be a hazard of immediate severe freezing or even death. Seeing oxygen is probably not worth that risk.
