What is the purpose of the adjustment screw in the craftsman 315 remote?

I couldn't find any documentation to verify this, but it appears to be a frequency adjustment or a signal strength adjustment. My remote wouldn't work unless it was right next to the wire antenna. By trial and error, I was able to adjust the screw (1/8 of a turn at a time) until remote worked from a range of about 50 feet.
