16 years old are allowed to drive but with a guardian by the side. & once your 17 you can have your licenses. ! duhh.! Keith adds. Here in Australia certain States allow for a person to have a licence at 16, Other States require the age of 18. However a 16 y.o. with a valid licence for his home State cannot drive in another State until he/she is 18. Whilst I was in law enforcement, I found the biggest problem to be that cars today have many features requiring less skill from a driver (ABS Power Steering, disc brakes, rack and pinion, auto transmission, better mirrors, radial tyres, sway bars, torsion bars coil suspension, better shocks the list goes on.) I saw many young drivers uable to handle bias ply tyres, power steering failure, power brake failure adverse road cambers, barke fade and the like. The modern motor car requires less skill to control so (in my professional opinion) a longer apprenticeship might be required. Many times I saw drivers sitting by the roadside with a flat tyre and absolutely no idea how to go about changing it.
