Why should steroids medications be tapered off slowly and not just stopped suddenly?

Steroid use slows down the body's own production of hormones. If you taper off, the body has a chance to get it's own production up and running again before the drug is withdrawn entirely. This keeps the hormone level more even than if the drug is just stopped, which is a good thing.
