What is one way in which life improved for the common person under Stalin?

Women were given greater roles in society than ever before. Under the Tsar, it was only men who worked, and women had to labour at home all day, but under Stalin, women did a lot more. They manned the machines, worked the land, ran the factories, built tanks, planes and artillery, they were miners, builders, painters and decorators and military officers.
