They are illegal in some countries such as the UK, Japan and the Netherlands. Apart from those, they are legal to use for the following,

- Playing homebrew games

- Playing videos

- Using it to use your Nintendo DS as an MP3 player

- Playing Nintendo Games you already own - for example my son has 20 games for his DS but I don't bring them all on holiday. So, I simply back up all 20 to my Acekard and bring them with me. I don't use any games that I haven't already bought and have at home
