People used a telegraph to communicate without speech by transmitting messages in the form of coded electrical signals, typically using Morse Code. Each letter and numeral was represented by a series of dots and dashes, which were sent over wires. Operators would tap out these codes using a telegraph key, and the receiving operator would decode the signals back into readable text. This method allowed for long-distance communication without the need for spoken Words.
