Most homeowners have a garden, but owning a garden does not make one a landscaping expert. Gardening can be a daunting task, particularly to the novice who is presented with a new home that has no landscaping, or the person who purchases an older home with a neglected garden. Some problems may require the help of an expert, however, people do not need a degree in landscape architecture or the help of a professional in order to create flourishing garden landscaping.
Each novice landscaper should check books out of the library, browse images on the internet, and look at the gardens in neighboring yards to figure out what appeals to them. Begin filling a notebook with research findings and helpful clippings. At this stage, start looking at the available space in the garden, measuring the plots, and observing them at all hours of the day to see which areas get full sun exposure, and which remain in the shade. This will help determine what types of plants can be placed in each area.
Then consider visiting a nursery. People working in these stores are experts on which plants thrive in the local climate, as well as which plants require full sun, or at least partial shade. Ask plenty of questions and make note of which plants seem like good choices for each area of the garden.
When an entire yard needs landscaping, it can be overwhelming. Try tackling one section at a time to keep the planning and budget on track. Decide on a color scheme for a particular section, matching it against what is available at the nursery. Then choose the specific plants, working from the fence line of that section, placing the tallest, largest plants in the back and working down to smaller, groundcover items for the area bordering the lawn or street. This technique ensures that every plant in the garden can be seen.
Above all, be patient and do not get discouraged. Gardening takes time and it may be a few seasons before some new landscaping items really begin to flourish. With time and a little bit of creativity, it’s possible to create beautiful garden landscaping.
