Confederacy was neither good nor bad, it simply represented a school of thought that was widely prevalent in southern states. Confederate leaders had popular support in their states. However, the conflict between Union and Confederacy turned into the civil war and this war despite a huge toll it took on life proved to be a good omen for union and strengthened USA in the longer run. However, with hindsight it can be said that confederacy stood for the principles which would have hindered United States ascension to the position of a super power, if it had not been defeated.
