An anachronism is something which is out of its time, such as aircraft vapour trails in a Hollywood cowboy movie.It can also be defined as something that has been said to have happened, been discovered or made in a certain year while it is not really true.
In Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, which was set in Rome in 44 AD, Cassius says, "The clock hath stricken three." However, the mechanical clock had not yet been invented.
