"margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:normal;">The Romans occupied
Andalusia and Catalonia for nearly 700 years. The conquest of Spain
was very gradual. The Romans took over southern Spain from the
Carthaginians in 206 BC and annexed the northern part of the
Mediterranean coast in 197 BC. They took over the rest of Spain
gradually and the conquest of the whole peninsula was completed by
Augustus in 19 BC. The Romans lost Spain to the Visigoths in the
late 5th century AD. The Byzantines, the Romans of the Roman Empire
of the East, retook Andalusia in and held it until 2, when the
Visigoths conquered it again.
