Absolutely awful example, because "past" is not a verb, it's a noun, as in "the distant past". "Passed away" is the correct Word to use when referring to death in the form of a verb.
Example of proper usage: "The question from the moderator required actual thought, a Word anathema to most talking heads on Fox News that were reviewing the presidential debate, as they weren't able to put their normal spin on the candidates' responses."
