In the epic poem:
Odysseus orders his men to steer away from Charbydis, and as such sails past Scylla instead.
In a particular movie adaptation:
The entire ship goes over a waterfall and into Charbydis mouth. Odysseus is able to escape by hanging onto a branch, and waiting until Charbydis expunges the water with some of the wreckage of the craft. He ends up adrift until Calypso finds him.
