The original version of the board game Scrabble was created by architect James Mosher Butts as "criss cross Words" in 1938. In 1948 James Brunot purchased the rights, made a few changes & changed the name to "Scrabble".
In 1938, architect Alfred Mosher Butts created the game as a variation on an earlier Word game he invented called Lexiko. (Wikipedia)
