Athens men typically wore a garment called a chiton, which was a simple tunic made from rectangular pieces of cloth fastened at the shoulders and belted at the waist. For formal occasions, they might don a himation, a draped cloak worn over the chiton. Footwear included sandals or going barefoot, depending on the occasion. In colder weather, men could wear a heavier cloak called a chlamys.
