Why did colonist destroy british tea in the Boston Tea Party?

The American colonists were tired of being forced to have only one choice of tea to buy and drink (which was tea from the East India Company), so they decided to rebel against it. On December 16, 60 Boston colonists disguised as Native Americans jumped onto the tea ships and dumped 342 chests of the tea into the Boston Harbor.
