The term "bucket list" is derived from the phrase "kick the bucket," which is a colloquial expression for dying. It gained popularity after the 2007 film "The Bucket List," in which two terminally ill men create a list of things they want to accomplish before they die. The concept emphasizes experiences and goals people wish to achieve in their lifetime, hence the idea of a list of items to complete "before you kick the bucket."
