At the age of 19 months, Helen suffered from a fever that left her deaf, blind and unable to speak.

Helen Keller got blind and deaf by a disease know as scarlet fever it didn't last long but left Helen Keller blind and deaf.

Ms. Keller contracted a disease at the age of 19 months that left her blind and deaf. Today there is only speculation as to what the disease was, since, in 1882, physicians had little means of naming it or even describing it accurately.
