How is Lenny both helpful and hurtful to other characters in of mice and men?

Lennie has a strong effect on other characters. He comes across as a bit of a child and everyone is scared to mess with him because of his big size and strength. The only person that stands up to him is Curley and even then he gets his hand crushed!
