The saber-toothed tiger, scientifically known as Smilodon, is an extinct genus of large carnivorous mammals that belonged to the subfamily Machairodontinae within the family Felidae. They lived during the Pleistocene epoch and are known for their elongated canine teeth. Despite the name, they are more closely related to modern big cats like lions and tigers than to any actual tigers. Saber-toothed tigers were apex predators, primarily hunting large herbivores.
