What type of organism is a saber-toothed tiger?

The saber-toothed tiger, scientifically known as Smilodon, is an extinct genus of large carnivorous mammals that belonged to the subfamily Machairodontinae within the family Felidae. They lived during the Pleistocene epoch and are known for their elongated canine teeth.
