Akechi Mitsuhide killed Oda Nobunaga on June 21, 1582, during a coup at Honnō-ji in Kyoto. Motivated by a combination of personal grievances, political ambition, and a desire to end Nobunaga's tyrannical rule, Mitsuhide sought to seize power for himself. His betrayal was also influenced by the fear that Nobunaga's aggressive unification efforts would ultimately threaten his own position. However, Mitsuhide's victory was short-lived, as he was defeated shortly afterward and committed suicide.
