The ASPCA, an animal rights group, was founded in New York in April, 1866 by Henry Bergh (1811-1888). In 1874, he also contributed to the founding of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC).

The SPCA's in various cities and locales are not affiliated with the ASPCA, although they share some of the same goals. However, local agencies tend to be more involved in animal control. The group called SPCA International is also a separate legal entity.

The same applies to local Humane Societies: state and local HS's have no affiliation with the Humane Society of the US.
