Every salamander starts its life as an embryo. Most species are born out of an egg, this is called the larval stage. The larvas develop under water until metamorphisis occurs. Their bodyshape changes and this is called the juvenile or subadult stage. Later the salamander becomes an adult an is able to reproduce itself.

In some species, the embryonic and larval phases are spent inside the mother, so they cant be seen. Other species do not have a visuble metamorfosis, the species are called neotene (eg: axolotl).
