Egyptians made kohl, the eyeliner they used, by grinding galena (lead ore) with other minerals, then applying it to their eyelids.

Since galena contains a lot of lead, the ancient Egyptians didn't live very long, especially since EVERYONE in ancient Egypt, including babies, wore kohl every day.
