What was the purpose of the Iron Act of 1750?

By restricting colonial importation of milling and forging machinery, the British hoped to reduce manufacturing and maintain a market for British steel and iron goods. Unfortunately, many of the colonial officials were themselves operating foundries, and therefore neglected enforcement.
