Saint Peter's Basilica was primarily funded by donations from the faithful, as well as income from the Papal States and the Catholic Church. The construction was initiated under Pope Julius II in the early 16th century, and later popes continued to finance the project through various means, including the controversial sale of indulgences. The basilica, completed in the 17th century, became a symbol of the church's wealth and influence.
