How many presidents had first ladies that weren't there wives?

President James Buchanan was the only president who never married; his niece Harriet Lane assumed the role of First Lady when it came time to entertain or host official dinners at the White House. President John Tyler had been married, but his first wife died. He was temporarily wifeless (for about two years), but he then re-married, while still in office.
