The main Theme of this short story is "Search for identity which leads to tragedy" Victor wanted to assimilate into the British culture so much to the extend of being obsessed with it until it led to his death. Ironically, his last wish of becoming white was fulfilled in the end but in a tragic manner.

Besides that "Social Discrimination" was also portrayed in the short story. The British colonizers practiced double-standards in many aspects of their daily life. For instance Victor was swept aside twice for the post of Junior Accountant due to the presence of George Gross and later George Bushby. Both of these Englishmen were given the privilege to become Junior Accountant due to their father's influence in the company and the fact that they were both white.

Lastly, "Greed" is also highlighted in this short story. Victor yearned for success, so much that he sacrificed his identity by converting from a Hindu to Christian and also by changing his name from Vickramadas to Victor to eliminate his Indian traits. Due to his immense obsession to climb the social and corporate ladder. His greed can also be seen when he cheats the company by stealing their stocks of latex to pay off his gambling debt which eventually leads to his death (By falling into the Formic Acid) and his final wish to be white being fulfilled
