Barnacles are small, aquatic crustaceans that belong to the subclass Cirripedia. They typically attach themselves permanently to hard surfaces, such as rocks, ship hulls, and even the shells of other marine animals. Barnacles are characterized by their hard calcareous shells and filter-feeding mechanisms, using specialized appendages called cirri to capture plankton and organic particles from the water. They play a role in marine ecosystems but can also become a nuisance in maritime contexts by causing biofouling.
