Why does a camera produce an upside-down image?

Because the pin hole or convex lens of the camera inverts the image being photographed. A ray of light angled downwards will be registered at the base of the film. A ray angled upwards will be registered at the top of the film. Thus inverting the image. It is easier to picture if you draw a ray diagram. Please see the attached link.
