Do children need a passport to go on a cruise to the Bahamas?

The Department of Homeland Security extended the deadline for passport requirements for US citizens to Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and the Bahamas. Until some time in summer 2008, all that is required for travel by boat (or by land) is a certified copy of a birth certificate and a government-issued photo id (such as a school ID).
