What does it mean to fly solo...What does the saying flying solo mean?

It's a metaphor for doing something by yourself. It comes from learning to pilot a plane (or hang-glide) -- you start out with an instructor doing most of the flying and you sitting next to him, then you take over or it could mean doing something by yourself with no help or noone willing to help you
