In To Kill a Mockingbird why does Miss Caroline hit Scout with the ruler?

She is punishing her for knowing how to read and write and for trying to explain Walter's situation to her.

she thinks that Scout being able to read will affect the new system being put into place. also, she thinks that scout is mocking her in front of the class.
