Who sang the original Cotton Eyed Joe?

Well the song pre-dates the American Civil War. Aparently there was a recording made in 1925 that is closer to the original version than the watered down lyrics used today. In the original song, the story is about Cotton Eyed Joe... a black man who woos all the women in town.
