Why did great Britain's standing world power change after World War 2?

The sun used to never set on the British empire, but the British outstretched themselves. The world economy shifted from mercantilism to capitalism and colonies became too costly. That coupled with decades of conflict and sprinkle in some world wars in Europe eliminated Britain as a world power contender.
