Francisco Franco y Bahamonde was a Spanish general, the (successful) leader of the right-wing Nationalist military rebellion in the Spanish Civil War, and authoritarian head of state of Spain, from October 1936 until his death in November 1975. The Spanish Civil War is viewed as a precursor to the Second World War.
