Why would my car shut off while your driving. it is a 1982 cheverlot caprice classic it has a 305 v8 in it. the car did not putter the motor just shut off.the car cranks over but will not start.?

Look in the carb and push the throttle, if there is no fuel, it could be the fuel pump. Pull a spark plug wire off and check for spark, put a screwdriver or similar piece of metal in the boot and lay it near a good ground on the engine, crank over and watch for spark, if no spark, replace the ignition module inside the distributor.
