From 1933 on, the situation for Jews in Germany became intolerable. They were beat up on the street for no reason, their businesss were torched, most of their rights were severely restricted, and the most vocal opponents of this treatment would suddenly "disappear". The Franks - and any other families that could - left Germany to try and find a normal life somewhere else where they didn't have to live in constant fear.
