Leonardo da vinci is, simply put, one of the greatest men to have ever lived. There is no way to pin him for one particularly Excellent skill or mindset, seeing as how he has attained great heights with sculpting, inventing, math, painting/sketching, and many others.
In his younger days, Da Vinci was apprenticed to the artist Verroccio, and exposed to many different types of things, like machines, which he was so utterly fascinated with that he attempted to question them and figure out how exactly they worked. And while he invented many of his own, both in his childhood and adulthood, he never published any of his works. Verroccio and Da Vinci, both great artist during the latter was allowed to assist in the painting of The Baptism of Christ, where he finished the paintings background and the angel on the left. Verroccio was so astounded by the young boys work that he swore to never again pick up a brush.
Many seem to think he was only ever an artist, since he is most commonly known for his work with The Last Supper and The Mona Lisa. His artwork has been portrayed in many ways, from school textbooks to t-shirt graphic designs, you can find examples most anywhere. The problem with his art though is that he hardly ever finished his work. Only a handful of finished paintings can be found, while most are still in half-finished sketches or are only half-painted.
As a scientist, Da Vinci always kept a notebook on hand that, when found and later scrupled, showed numerous detailed drawings of anatomical references to horses, humans and their faces, and plants. Sometimes however the pages showed nothing more than what appeared to be randomly jotted down notes and reminders. Da Vinci, worried that others may steal his work, even invented his own shorthand that he used frequently; or so that is the theory. Some say he may have just worried the ink on the page would smear when he continued writing (he was left handed) so he wrote backwards, in the way that you would have to hold it to a mirrors reflection to read it.
While Da Vinci made such advances, he had little to no involvement with science-based astronomy. Most likely because of the lack of good equipment for studying the skies and stars in his time. Although, he did pose a rather strange question. He wondered if the revolving and rotating of the planets produced sound. He theorized that they didn't, and it was much later (although not by him) proved.
Conclusively, Leonardo was the starting point of quite a few things. His sketches and ideas were taken and used for many of the things we use this present day. Large things like tanks, helicopters, a basic theory involving plate tectonics, and even the use of sunlight for power. Small things like scissors and parachutes, which leads me to think he was born ahead of his time.
