Antenatal screening (prenatal) involves collecting a urine sample and often a variety of blood samples, depending on gestational age of fetus. Cultures may also be performed to ensure there are no bacteria in vagina or cervix that could infect the fetus. On a first visit, a urine or serum pregnancy test may be performed to confirm pregnancy.
